Silmaril in Aisle 3, 20% Off [22 Jun 2008|06:49pm]
So, I was walking through the parking lot of the department store next to my apartment building this morning and saw a care with the license plate "FEANOR".

That is all.

Like the Fenix [13 Mar 2008|10:10pm]
So, The Freak Report has been rather, well, quiet for the past seven months or so. But I'm not dead yet! Of course, this could just be an errant blip. Regardless, there are some reasons for my web-silence, the main one being that my day-to-day life isn't really all that exciting, unless I want to rant about work or similar things but that gets tiresome after a while (even for me). Secondly, life of late has gotten rather unfortunately busy (read: work sucks) so there hasn't been a lot of time/motivation to write anything much about anything.

Be all that as it may, and in the hopes of continuing future updates, here are some highlights over the past few months (likely, though not necessarily in chronological order):

I got all my grad school submissions in and am now starting to get a bit impatient about hearing back. I should hear something soon, but I just want to know when its safe to stop caring about work!

The holidays came and went, which was all good, especially since it was time not at work.

FASS also came and went with this years "Global Warming" theme. I was rather disappointed in the part I had, even with the song it was kind of "meh". Don't get me wrong, the part was funny, just very, very small. The show itself went well, which is good. It was also interesting as this was the first year I've been part of the writing team.

Orchestra is moving along. More challenging stuff to play again this term, but it is fun. It's a good type of challenge, not the frustrating kind that happens at work all too often. Back at the start of the term when orchestra and FASS were just getting started, it occurred to me that these sorts of activities are really the ones that define who I am, not my job. I am very much not defined by my job. I suppose some people would define themselves by their job, but I don't understand them. My life is these other things, work is just something I do.

There's just been too damn much snow this winter. On the bright side, living in an apartment, I don't have to shovel it.

Anyway, that about sums it up. Other stuff probably happened, but those were kind of the personal highlights. Oh, and we had that new February holiday "wear you underwear on you head" day (well, Family Day, really) so that was, like, yay!

Alice in Freakland [24 Aug 2007|06:36pm]
This afternoon at work, whilst rummaging through my backpack for a CD, I found a pack of gum. "Hmm," I thought to myself, "where did that come from?" As I don't chew gum, normally, I shrugged and thought back "Who knows?" and proceed to pop one out of the package and start chewing.

So far, aside from getting a bit of exercise for my jaw, nothing out of the ordinary has happened as a result... but I'm waiting.

Even the Fortune Cookies are Against Me [28 Jul 2007|12:05pm]
So, I had dinner at a local Chinese restaurant earlier this week, including the prerequesite fortune cookie. (I opened it before I ate it.) Now, the fortune was pretty standard, but on the other side it had this "learn Chinese" thing with a Chinese phrase and accompanying characters. The one on mine was... "Still single (not married)" (mae yao jeh huan). Le sigh. It seems even the fortune cookies are conspiring against me these days.

Ah well, I got a bit of a laugh out of it.

Another One [27 Jul 2007|06:42am]
My food is invisible,
The seventeen crumpets
Dance like a super fly.
Geneticists salivate, why?
Clearly, they are hungry.
Is that an operetta
Skulking over yonder?
Or just...
...A vowel?

More Random Secretions from the Pre-frontal Lobe [24 Jul 2007|01:28pm]
I don't know what brought these on, they just popped into my head:

My nasal cavity enlarges.
"Is that a rhinoceros I see in there?"
Perhaps it's best not to think about it.

-----

Yellow is the colour of my struddle,
The bowl that holds it is covered in hot sauce.
Perhaps your glasses are too tight.

Food Fight [12 Jul 2007|04:35pm]
I've just finished putting together my AMV for CTRL-A's AMV contest this weekend. It's an idea that's been bouncing around in my head for several years that I've finally motivated myself to doing. I don't expect to win or anything, but the video was fun to make, nonetheless, and it's silly so it's all good.

Vacationissitudes [28 Jun 2007|11:50am]
I feel like I want to make an entry, so I'll say this:

Narf.

Actually, it's about the half-way point of my vacation and, reflecting upon it, life would be so much better overall if vacations were longer and/or more plentiful. A week (and a bit) spent away from work is, in my books, automatically a good week. While I've not, perhaps, been as productive with some things as I would have liked, as it is a vacation, after all, I think I'll forgive myself if I've not done as much project work as I'd intended. Progress is progress, after all.

Anyway, that is all.

Signs of Insanity [16 Jun 2007|07:40am]
Signs you play too much Guitar Hero:

When you wake up in the morning, the first thing that goes through your head is the latest song you're trying to get 5 stars on (in hard mode).

Something About Band Camp... [14 Jun 2007|09:57pm]
Something amusing that our conductor said during orchestra rehersal this evening:

"Oh, you thought I meant woodwinds. When I say winds, I mean everyone who blows their instrument."

I'll leave you to ruminate on that.

Something Shoujo - Chapter 6 [21 May 2007|08:02am]
It's been a while since I've posted a chapter, but I'm still poking at Something Shoujo periodically. It will probably be a little while before I post another chapter as I'd like to ponder the direction the story is going for a little while before writting anything further - well, between everything else I'm trying to find the time to work on, that is.

A Case Study [20 May 2007|03:52pm]
I mentioned this to a couple of my readers already, but for the sake of posterity, here is a link to an article that I found rather fascinating: Game development gone wrong.

I found the article fascinating, because it gave me a strong sense of deja vu. As I was reading it, at many points I found myself thinking "that's exactly what things were like at the place I worked for in Toronto!"

Ode to a Spoon [06 May 2007|12:25pm]
There is no spoon.
Because my spoon thinks it's a fork.
My fork thinks it's a napkin.
The napkin is in intensive therapy.

Makes Sense To Me [09 Apr 2007|06:14pm]
I saw this on a forum I have the habit of browsing and thought I'd share because it made me laugh:

"Since it is also said that money is the root of all evil, then by simple reasoning we can see that as the bringer of money, work is morally corrupt and should be outlawed."

Is Your Toilet Running? [19 Mar 2007|06:38pm]
As I was driving to the CTRL-A show on Saturday morning, I saw something interesting. I had just gotten some gas and stopped off at the bank and was driving towards the University along, of all things, University Ave, when a smart car passed me. This, in and of itself, is not particularly noteworthy. However, I thought I saw "Thorne" on the side of the smart car, so I did a double take. As it turned out, there was no "Thorne" on the side of the car, what it actually said was "A Throne of Your Own." It was then that I noticed that there was a toilet attached to the top of the car, which was the interesting bit. My final observation was that the car in question was a Trans Globe company car.

I guess I just find it amusing that the first thing I noticed was not the unusual positioning of a bathroom fixture.

Gaping Maw [01 Mar 2007|04:35pm]
Due to the weather, not only was work closed early (at 3:30), but orchestra rehersal has been cancelled for tonight as well.

Best Idea EVAR [11 Feb 2007|07:01pm]
Here's my idea (which I've had for a while) for the greatest computer peripheral device EVAR. (Yes, it really is that good.) It can take one of two forms: it would either be a giant hand attached to the side of the monitor or a spring-loaded boxing glove that springs from a hidden compartment. Either way, it would slap (or punch) the user whenever they did something stupid or foolish.

Now, I freely admit that I'd get myself slapped by this contraption on occassion, but darn it, it would be worth it.

FASS Power, Make-up! [01 Feb 2007|11:53pm]
Woo! The opening night of FASS 2007 was this evening and, overall, it seems things went pretty well. We messed up a bit with one of the verses of the closing song, but that's the only thing noticable that I was aware of. And there was a decent sized crowed, too, so things seem to be off to a good start.

Three more shows to go, and then... sleep!!!

Singing and Dancing Tangerines [19 Jan 2007|07:42am]
The closing theme for this year's FASS is to the tune of Michael Jackson's "Bad". Now, as I don't own a copy of "Bad", and have no real desire to acquire one, I was listening to Weird Al's version, "Fat", this week. It's been a while since I've listened to "Fat", but it occured to me that Weird Al does a really good job of mimicing the style of an artist/song that he's parodying. I mean, the man has some serious talent and I think it's really a shame that his music doesn't get more "mainstream" exposure. Of course I also think it's a shame that more light hearted and comedic music doesn't get more air time as it is. But then, I'm weird.

Anywho, that is all.

Something Shoujo - Part 5 [15 Jan 2007|07:44am]
Yarrr. Here be Chapter 5 of Something Shoujo. Now to go start writing Chapter 6. Yarrrr.
